The principle and drying process of a wood drying kiln

06-11-2023

A wood drying kiln is a device that uses hot air to dry wood. The drying principle is to heat the wood with hot air, causing the moisture molecules inside to evaporate, thereby achieving drying. The entire drying process is divided into three stages: preheating stage, normal temperature stage, and heating stage.

  1. Preheating section
At this stage, the operator will put fresh wood into the drying kiln, then turn on the hot air fan, and use low-temperature and low humidity air to preheat the wood, allowing the moisture on the surface of the wood to evaporate slightly. This is to avoid shrinkage and deformation of the wood during the heating process.

  2. Normal temperature range
The normal temperature range is to ensure that wood can be uniformly heated during the heating period, thereby achieving a relatively uniform drying process. This process generally requires the humidity inside the drying kiln to be maintained between 40% and 60%.

  3. Heating section
This is the main stage of wood drying, where wood requires long-term and high temperature heating, usually at a temperature above 150 ℃ for 20-24 hours. This stage is the key stage of wood drying. About halfway through the wood drying process, it is necessary to adjust the hot air fan to gradually reduce the output heat and control the humidity in the drying kiln between 5% and 10%.
