Performance characteristics of carbonized wood

Carbonized wood is a modified product of high-temperature heat treatment of wood. Compared with ordinary wood, it has a series of characteristics:

1. Hygroscopicity and water absorption are significantly reduced. After the wood is heat-treated at high temperature, the hygroscopic free hydroxyl functional groups are greatly reduced, so the hygroscopicity of the wood can be reduced by about 51%.

2. When in use, the equilibrium moisture content is significantly reduced, and the dimensional stability is greatly improved. Due to the reduced hygroscopicity of wood, under the same air condition, the equilibrium moisture content of carbonized wood can be reduced by about 50% compared with conventional wood.

Dimensional stability is usually expressed by the chord or radial swelling of wood. Since the hygroscopicity of carbonized wood is significantly reduced, its wet swelling will also be correspondingly reduced, so the dimensional stability is greatly improved ( about 42%).

3. The biological corrosion resistance is obviously improved. Due to the degradation of wood hemicellulose in the carbonization process, free acetic acid is generated, and the wood extract volatilizes at high temperature, all of which cut off the food chain of decaying fungi and improve the biological corrosion resistance of carbonized wood.

4. The volatilization of the extract is beneficial to the gluing and surface coating of wood.

5. The color of the wood is beautiful, uniform and durable, and the "carbonization" process at different temperatures can be used to simulate the color of precious tree species

6. The hardness and compressive strength along the grain of the wood are improved.

7. The modulus of elasticity of wood increases slightly.

8. The density of wood is slightly reduced (about 3%).

9. The flexural strength of wood is reduced, but not by much. The strength of wood has a great relationship with the density, because the density of carbonized wood decreases, which will cause the strength to decrease; but the hygroscopicity and equilibrium moisture content of carbonized wood are significantly reduced. Under the same use environment, the moisture content of carbonized wood is significantly lower than that of carbonized wood. For conventional wood, the strength of wood increases with the decrease of adsorbed moisture content, so the strength compensation due to the decrease of moisture content finally makes the reduction of the flexural strength of carbonized wood small (about 5%).

10. The brittleness of wood increases, and the impact bending strength and shear strength decrease significantly (the former decreases by about 25%, and the latter decreases by about 20%).
