The purpose and significance of wood drying
Wet wood suitable materials for industrial applications are usually used for low industrial, density, mechanical strength, mechanical properties, perishability, etc., not directly used, practicality and practicality after treatment and drying. It mainly has the following aspects.
1.Improve the dimensional stability of wood products and prevent deformation and cracking of wood
When the moisture content of wood is below the fiber saturation point (about 30%), the size of the wood will shrink or swell with the change of environmental humidity. When the wood shrinks, there are gaps in the wooden doors and windows. When the wood swells, the wooden floor may lift and the doors and windows cannot be closed. Drying the moisture content of the wood to a level suitable for the environment can prevent the wood from shrinking and swelling to a certain extent, thereby preventing the deformation and cracking of the wood. For example, in the arid northwest region of my country, the equilibrium moisture content of wood is about 10%, and the wood needs to be dried to a moisture content of 7% to 9%. In the southeastern coastal areas, the climate is humid, and the final moisture content of wood drying should be 12% to 13%. Wood products used in the Northeast region and exported to North America should be dried to a final moisture content of 6% to 8% due to the requirements of indoor heating conditions.
2.Reduce downgrade losses, prevent wood decay and pest infestation
If the logs are not dried in time or the drying process is improper, the sawn timber may be cracked, deformed, discolored and other defects, and the wood will be degraded. At the same time, when the moisture content of wood is between 20% and 100%, it is easy to produce mold, leading to decay and moth-eaten. Drying the wood to a moisture content below 20% or storing it in water can avoid these pests. For example, masson pine is widely distributed in southern my country, and its wood density and strength are medium. It is suitable for construction, vehicles, furniture, etc., but the wood is prone to decay, discoloration and moth-eaten, but if it is dried to a moisture content of less than 20%, it can be used. Effectively maintain the inherent quality of wood.
